It looks as though some people still think there may something useful in UX2BS, although it appears that few people could figure out how it was all meant to fit together, so maybe it's time for a refresh... The last time I tried it, it worked fine, so I don't understand why it would have needed changing. Just to explain how I wanted UX2BS to work... Firstly, I wanted a very simple, and easily reproducible way to install a tool set for building Unix apps on OS/2. Secondly, I wanted a very simple, and easily reproducible way to build Unix apps on OS/2 using the standard tool set which had previously been installed. The initial problem was the identification of the absolute minimum requirement for the toolset and which version should be used. This is what I call the 'baseline' toolset which is simply downloaded and installed. A number of apps in this baseline tool set are old versions, so my first priority as far as using the toolset was to refresh as many of the utils in the toolset as possible to bring them uptodate. In effect the first time the bootstrap process is run, it should download and install the baseline toolset and then proceed to update as much of that toolset as possible, whilst at the same time add some new essential tools such as Perl, Autoconf, Automake etc. Once the initial bootstrap has run successfully, then any individual apps should be buildable simply by issuing the 'build XYZ' command. In my view, UX2BS has proved reasonably successful with quite a number of apps, but I still have a few issues with the initial bootstrap. In addition there are other developments such as Posix/2 and the possible availability of symbolic links which I think should be examined to see how things can be improved. Maybe it's a good time to re-examine UX2BS and see what needs to be done to make it more functional and robust... -- John _______________________________________________ UX2BS mailing list UX2BS at os2ports.com http://os2ports.com/mailman/listinfo/ux2bs **= Email 2 ==========================** Date: Sun, 22 Jun 2003 18:55:42 +0200 (CDT) From: "Adrian Gschwend" Subject: Re: UX2BS refresh On Sun, 22 Jun 2003 09:27:17 +0100, John Poltorak wrote: Hi John! >Apologies for being out of the loop for a few months, I wanted to spend >time on things not related to computers. Welcome back! For sure you deserved a break, no doubt about that! I hope everything is fine on your side. We were just worried about you until we got the feedback that you are ok. >It looks as though some people still think there may something useful in >UX2BS, although it appears that few people could figure out how it was all >meant to fit together, so maybe it's time for a refresh... I think quite a lot of people know that this project is very important for OS/2. Let me thank you for all the work you did so far, it's nice to see that some more people started to catch it up now and continue with it. With the current discussions about the future of EMX and it's successors I'm quite optimistic about this project! cu Adrian -- Adrian Gschwend at netlabs.org ktk [a t] netlabs.org ------- Free Software for OS/2 and eCS http://www.netlabs.org _______________________________________________ UX2BS mailing list UX2BS at os2ports.com http://os2ports.com/mailman/listinfo/ux2bs **= Email 3 ==========================** Date: Sun, 22 Jun 2003 19:51:16 +0100 From: John Poltorak Subject: Re: UX2BS refresh On Mon, Jun 23, 2003 at 02:23:12AM +1000, IanM wrote: > Works fine here, on the proviso the obvious is done, remove other > version of files in your path :) You should not need to do anything to your path... > Cheers > IanM > http://www.os2site.com/ > -- John _______________________________________________ UX2BS mailing list UX2BS at os2ports.com http://os2ports.com/mailman/listinfo/ux2bs
