Subject:   make produces exec of unknown type

I'm trying to build ncftp 3.1.9. The build process completes and leaves 
me with  five .exe files in the ./bin directory. However, none of these 
will run - they are all of 'unknown' type. I have made no changes to the 
source except to move the contents of ./autoconf into the top level 
directory.
Then went:
autoconf (v2.13, as this had been used to generate the supplied configure)
configure --without-curses --disable-ccdv
make

Can anyone help?
