Does it take too long, and does that matter on todays processors? Or does it eat memory and does that matter with todays memory sizes? Or what? Just curious. -- Regards Dave Saville Please note new email address dave.saville at ntlworld.com **= Email 2 ==========================** Date: Fri, 4 Oct 2002 09:40:37 +0100 From: John Poltorak Subject: Re: Perl 5.8.0 binary On Thu, Oct 03, 2002 at 10:16:08PM +0100, Thomas Hoffmann wrote: > On usenet I read some minutes ago: > > .... > On Sat, 20 Jul 2002 11:49:09 UTC, John Poltorak wrote: > > > Perl 5.8.0 has just been released, and thanks to some last minute > > changes, builds pretty well on OS/2. > .... > > > What about providing a pre-built Perl 5.8.0 for people that just would > like to > use this sofware for building other stuff (vs. people that are after > permanent "proofs of concept")? You could try using that if you wish. A few people managed to get it built with only a few test failures, but no package was put together. Maybe this is something which can be addressed... There is a reluctance on my part of trying to put something together because it is a build created out of the box using the supplied defaults, whereas previous versions like the one put together by HS have been optimised to perform well on OS/2. Also, the whole UnixOS/2 distro seems to be on hold at the moment and there seems little interest in continuing with it, which is a pity after the success we had in getting Perl built out of the box, something which I would like to be able to do with every Unix app... > > -- > Thomas Hoffmann Telephone: > 49-351-4598831 > thoffman at zappa.sax.de Dresden, > Germany > > ..sig under construction ... -- John **= Email 3 ==========================** Date: Fri, 04 Oct 2002 20:25:36 +0000 From: "Lyn St George" Subject: Re: Perl 5.8.0 binary On Fri, 4 Oct 2002 09:40:37 +0100, John Poltorak wrote: >On Thu, Oct 03, 2002 at 10:16:08PM +0100, Thomas Hoffmann wrote: >> What about providing a pre-built Perl 5.8.0 for people that just would >> like to >> use this sofware for building other stuff (vs. people that are after >> permanent "proofs of concept")? The 'ic' refers to this having been built with some extra #define's and modules to suit Interchange (an ecommerce application server). >There was an period of intense activity when a number of us were trying to >come with a definitive Perl 5.8.0 build using a standard build script. It is very quiet at the moment on the list, though I'm not sure that this should translate into "little interest in continuing", at least I sincerely hope not. Personally speaking, because I am not a trained programmer I can't make huge contributions, but for those few things I can do then I am very definitely interested in keeping the whole UnixOS/2 project alive and progressing. My own TODO list includes attempted builds of MySQL (with gcc, rather than Yuri Dario's one with VAC), BerkeleyDB, Procmail, Perl with 'has_chown' #define'd, Apache with mod_perl, and Interchange using Unix-style sockets.
