But if I was unwilling to pay, I'd do this to base OS/2 Warp 4: make a few configsys changes due to personal taste. remove the welcome icon from Startup uninstall the automatic registration tool install my own collection of command line utils fixpak15 reboot ddpak2 reboot install the Audio Driver install my own sound scheme install SciTech Display doctor (another thing I was willing to pay for) patch the kernel with the latest w4 kernel available install danis506 (I like IDE), daniatapi, danidasd drivers. install the scrolling mouse driver wr_8610 reboot wr_8621 reboot un_0980 configure hosts and resolv2 reboot ip_8414 reboot install the PrinterDriver and after that I'd make a full back up. This will give you 32-bit networking support, you need to search the wr_8610 install media for the updated C/C++ headers and libraries. I'd also consult before starting. I noticed on IBM's support site that the latest Warp4 fixpak was Xrm_016. However when I attempted to download it, I got a security popup asking for my ID and password. Of course, I do not subscribe, no wanting to spend money for what IBM considers a dead, non-supported OS. What do you folks do to keep your OS up to date, especially if the idiots at IBM are going to start charging for basic fixpaks? Can I get V4.3 of the TCP/IP stack without forking over money to IBM for what should be a fundamental and basic OS component? What about the latest Os2 PM Toolkit? I'm on 4.5 but I suppose there are newer ones? If they no longer are interested in OS/2 why don't they just give it all away, including VA 3.0/3.6/4.0? Or better yet just open up the source so we can all support it ourselves? FYI, we about to weeks from releasing the latest wxWindows, which will include wxOS2 for the first time. **= Email 3 ==========================** Date: Fri, 23 Aug 2002 14:24:35 -0500 From: Dave Webster Subject: RE: Basic OS/2 support Thanks, Jack. You text format was bad so I had a hard time reading your mail. I'll consider the eComStation PRO upgrade to my Warp4 box. Mainly I want a system I can keep updated with support for the latest stuff like modern 120GB+ hardrives, Gigabytes of RAM and so on...without spending new money every year. Does eComStation ship with Scitech's latest SNAP Graphics support included? And what's this "IBM Browser"? Is that the latest attempt at providing OS/2 a state-of-the art browser? -----Original Message----- From: Jack Troughton [mailto:jake at consultron.ca] Sent: Friday, August 23, 2002 2:02 PM To: os2-unix at eyup.org Subject: Re: Basic OS/2 support This message uses a character set that is not supported by the Internet Service. What about the latest Os2 PM Toolkit? > I'm on 4.5 but I suppose there are newer ones? Well, I bought eComStation. It's a much better deal than Software Choice... not least because drivers and fixes are going to keep coming just as long as they're produced without the need to pay a subscription. Whether that's ok for you or not is another question entirely. Of course, in the interests of full disclosure, I should mention that I'm the Canadian distributor... though I wasn't when I first bought it. > If they no longer are interested in OS/2 why don't they just give it all > away, including VA 3.0/3.6/4.0? Do you think they're going to let that go? > FYI, we about to weeks from releasing the latest wxWindows, which will > include wxOS2 for the first time. That sounds fantastic! What did you use to compile it, btw? Just curious... This is probably the one you want. eCS ships with the IBM version of Scitech Display Doctor. The IBM Browser is the IBM branded version of Mozilla. I'd stronly recommend you not use that and get the uptodate version at ftp.mozilla.org. Also, if you're thinking of getting eCS, wait a couple more months and get the 1.1 version. You'll get better bang for your buck that way. I'm currently running the 1.1b release... and it's also my mailer. However, because of the large number of people I correspond with that use PMMail, I have it defaulting to Western (IBMCP850) instead of Western (ISO8859-1), which is why you're server/agent puked on the charset in the message. > -----Original Message----- > From: Jack Troughton [mailto:jake at consultron.ca] > Sent: Friday, August 23, 2002 2:02 PM > To: os2-unix at eyup.org > Subject: Re: Basic OS/2 support > > > This message uses a character set that is not supported by the Internet > Service. Actually what sucks is "Internet Mail Service (5.5.2650.21)". I would recommend using something else were you my client. ;-) Gene -- +=========================-=>Unix & OS/2<=-=========================+ # Owner and C.E.O. - ERA Computer Consulting - Jackson, TN USA # # eCS,OS/2,UnixWare,OpenServer & Linux Business Computing Solutions # # Please visit our www pages at http://eracc.hypermart.net/ # +===================================================================+ We run IBM OS/2 v.4.00, Revision 9.036 Sysinfo: 42 Processes, 162 Threads, uptime is 3d 9h 37m 55s 717ms
